QUARANTINE TANK GUIDE: HOW TO PROTECT YOUR AQUARIUM
🏥
📌 Quarantining new fish prevents disease outbreaks and keeps your main tank safe!
🔹 Why Quarantine?

🐟 New fish often carry parasites, bacteria, or fungal infections that may not be visible right away.

🦠 A separate quarantine tank (QT) / hospice tank (HT) allows you to observe, treat, and stabilize fish before adding them to the main tank.

🔹 How to Set Up a Quarantine Tank
  • Tank Size: 10–20 gallons is ideal for most fish; larger species may need more space.
  • Bare-Bottom Tank: Easier to clean and monitor waste buildup.
  • Vacuum: Daily removal of waste and parasites (gravel vac works).
  • Filter: Use a sponge filter or cycled media (no carbon if medicating).
  • Heater: Keep temperature stable for the species.
  • Aeration: Airstone or sponge filter for oxygen exchange.
  • Hiding Places: PVC pipes or plastic plants to reduce stress.
  • Light: Dim blue light 24/7 can reduce stress; many diseases thrive under bright light.
  • Lid/Cover: Prevents jumping due to stress.
🔹 Quarantine Process: What to Do
  • Observe for 2–4 weeks – Watch for scratching, weight loss, or odd swimming.
  • Feed a nutritious diet – High-quality food boosts immune function.
  • Test water regularly – Keep ammonia & nitrites at 0 ppm.
  • Medications (Optional):
    • 🦠 Preventative Antiparasitic: Praziquantel (PraziPro) or Metroplex.
    • 💊 Broad-Spectrum Antibiotic: Kanaplex or Furan-2 if infection is suspected.
    • 🍄 Antifungal (if needed): Methylene Blue for stressed fish.
🔹 When to End Quarantine?
  • ✅ If no symptoms after 3–4 weeks, the fish is safe to introduce.
  • ✅ If treated, extend QT another 2–4 weeks to confirm recovery.
  • Proper acclimation reduces stress and prevents shock.
🔹 Common Mistakes to Avoid
  • Skipping Quarantine – One sick fish can wipe out an entire tank.
  • Sharing Equipment – Always disinfect nets, siphons, and tools.
  • Using Carbon While Medicating – Carbon removes medication.
  • Medicating Without Diagnosis – Identify the disease first.
